As sustainable construction becomes ever more important, greater emphasis is being placed on the recycling of site-won and otherwise waste materials in order to minimise disposal to landfill, transport pollution and project costs. Such operations can be adopted as part of a Material Management Plan.
Soil manufacture techniques involve the use of site won and/or imported soils and organic ameliorants to produce topsoils, subsoils, tree sands, lightweight rootzones and other specifically ‘designed soils’. that provide a suitable planting environment for semi-mature trees, ornamental shrubs, native woodland planting, amenity grass and wildflower grassland.
This approach can also be applied to dedicated ‘topsoil manufacture’ recycling operations. A permanent topsoil manufacture plant can be set up to utilise recycled soils, overburden and composts, and to sell the manufactured topsoil to commercial and domestic markets.
