The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) new air traffic control facility at Prestwick Airport included a 12 hectare external environment made up of large-scale landforms, swales, permanent water-bodies (SUDS) and infrastructure landscaping. Habitats ranged from heathland, species-rich grassland and wetlands to formal semi-mature tree planting, hedge-rows and amenity grass verges.
The site was a former colliery tip so there were no natural soils to re-use. Topsoil and subsoil was manufactured for a large majority of the project from site-won spoil and imported organic ameliorants. Imported topsoil was used for the car park hedge planting and tree pits.
Tim O’Hare Associates was responsible for the delivery and management of all soil resources from the commencement to completion of the landscape works. This included:
Close liaison with the landscape architect and engineers
Undertaking soil resource surveys
The development of a soil management strategy
Technical input into tender specifications
Site inspection and monitoring role during the two year construction period
