The Mezyad Desert Park and Hotel project site is located in Abu Dhabi Emirate south of the oasis city of Al Ain between the settlement of Meyzad and the Jebel Hafit massif, the largest mountain in the United Arab Emirates.
The project has two main aims: 1) to restore the severely degraded desert land into a National Park in order to display the area’s natural diversity of flora and fauna, archeological sites and innate physical beauty, and 2) to develop a luxury hotel and oasis spa in the heart of the existing oasis.
The restoration of the desert land will largely involve the removal of existing camel and goat farms and the reinstatement of the original wadi system that emerges from the foothills of Jebel Hafit mountain. The Desert Park project will involve a limited amount of construction work to create a new visitor centre, satellite areas and infrastructure, with higher specification landscaping within these locations. The Meyzad hotel and oasis spa will have a far more extensive landscape scheme, including mature palm groves, semi-mature deciduous trees and large ornamental planting areas.
Tim O’Hare Associates undertook a Soil Resource Survey of the entire site to provide baseline information on the soils. The scope involved desk study research of the region, its climate and geology, on-site soil surveys and laboratory tests of representative soil samples. The findings were presented in an interpretive report with supporting plans and soil maps.
This information was used to develop the landscape design and restoration plan, to assist with re-colonising the site with native species.
